The Method

How to calculate wallpaper rolls

Example: a 5 × 4 m room with 3 m walls → 18 m of wall → 34 drops from 53 cm rolls → each 10 m roll gives 3 drops of 3.10 m → 12 rolls.

  1. Width

    Add up the wall widths

For a whole room: (length + width) × 2. For one wall: just its width.

  2. Drops

    Count the drops

Total width ÷ roll width, rounded up.

  3. Drop length

    Work out each drop’s length

Wall height + 10 cm for trimming; with a pattern, round up to a whole number of repeats.

  4. Per roll

    Drops per roll

Roll length ÷ drop length, rounded down — the rest goes to trimming or above doors.

  5. Rolls

    Rolls

Drops ÷ drops per roll, rounded up — plus one spare roll from the same batch.

Mistakes that cost extra rolls — or a two-tone wall

One batch number

Different batches can differ by a shade that shows on the wall. Buy every roll from the same batch.

A spare for repairs

If you want to keep paper for future repairs, make it from the same batch.

Doors and windows

Do not deduct normal openings — the pieces above and below them still need paper.

Half-drop patterns

They waste more than straight matches. Choose “large repeat” or type the repeat into the calculator.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls for a 4 × 4 m room, and what does it cost?

With 3 m walls (all four walls): about 4 rolls of our 15 m² rolls — SAR 1,120 Chinese, 1,360 Korean or 1,600 Vietnamese, supplied and installed. With standard 53 cm × 10 m rolls you need about 11 rolls.

How much is a roll of wallpaper?

Our rolls are about 15 m² and cover a 5 × 3 m wall: SAR 280 Chinese, SAR 340 Korean and SAR 400 Vietnamese — supply and installation included. Prices and examples.

How many square metres does a roll of wallpaper cover?

Our rolls cover about 15 m² — a 5 × 3 m wall. A standard 53 cm × 10 m roll covers about 5.3 m² on paper, less in practice after trimming and pattern matching.

Should I deduct doors and windows?

Not normal ones — the pieces above and below them still need paper, and the difference covers trimming waste. Only very large openings such as glass walls are deducted.

What is a pattern repeat?

The vertical distance after which the pattern repeats, printed on the roll label (for example 53 cm). The larger the repeat, the more waste, because every drop must start at the same point of the pattern.

Are wide rolls better value?

They are usually quicker to hang with fewer seams, but compare the price per square metre and the waste — we work it out for you in the quote.
