Wallpaper or paint?

Paint is cheaper and easier to refresh; wallpaper gives texture and pattern paint cannot match. Many of the best rooms use both.

The short answer

Paint for the room, wallpaper for one feature wall

Paint is cheaper (SAR 12–35 per m² for standard paints), easier to clean, touch up and refresh, and suits most walls, kitchens and bathrooms. Wallpaper gives a linen or fabric texture and patterns paint cannot reach — ideal behind the bed or on the majlis focal wall. The best result is often both: paint for the whole room plus wallpaper on one wall.

The choice comes down to three questions: how often do you want to change the look? Does the wall face water or heavy wear? And do you want texture and pattern, or a clean colour?

There is also a third option for a feature wall: decorative paints such as Venetian plaster and microcement, or wall panels in a wood or marble finish if you want a tougher surface.

When to choose which

A quick decision for your situation

Paint

Young children at home

Washable paint survives repeated scrubbing of crayon art.

Paint

Kitchens and bathrooms

Moisture-resistant paint is safer than any wallpaper.

Paint

You like to change often

A new colour is easier and cheaper than stripping paper.

Wallpaper

One feature wall

Behind the bed or the majlis focal wall — a big effect at a limited cost.

Wallpaper

A wall with minor flaws

A thicker paper hides them after proper preparation.

Common mistakes

What spoils the result either way?

  • Wallpaper over damp: it lifts and stains within months — fix the source of the damp first.
  • Skipping the primer: paint or paper without the right base coat does not last.
  • Patterns without matching: patterned paper needs careful cutting and matching at the corners, or the seams show.
  • Gloss on a wavy wall: gloss paint magnifies every flaw — matt is kinder to older walls.
A simple rule: if in doubt, paint the room a calm colour and try wallpaper on one wall. If you love it, carry on.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is wallpaper more expensive than paint?

Usually yes per square metre, especially textile papers and murals. On a single feature wall the difference stays small, and paint remains the economical way to cover a whole room.

Does wallpaper peel?

When it is hung over damp or on a poorly prepared wall. On a sound wall with the right primer it stays put for many years.

Can I paint over wallpaper?

We do not recommend it — paint can loosen the paper and show its edges. Strip the paper, prepare the wall, then paint.

Which is better for kids’ rooms?

Washable paint for most walls, with wipeable wallpaper or a calm pattern on one wall.

How many rolls do I need?

Use the wallpaper calculator — it counts drops and rolls for your room, roll size and pattern repeat.
